Alexandra van Dyk is a New Zealand-based artist whose work investigates the anatomy of presence: the raw, vibrating place where the internal self meets the external world. Through a process-led practice involving acrylics, inks, graphite, she explores the messy beauty of being human.

Her practice is currently anchored in three distinct yet interconnected strands:

  • The Interior Landscape: Alexandra uses the coastline as a metaphor for the psyche. The trinity of land, sea and sky reflect internal truths within ourselves. The “Waimairi Beach series” in particular is an expression of this. These artworks were conceived during the midwinter reflection of Matariki, and the paintings explore how the ocean, land and wind hold our emotional weight, how we turn to nature when we feel heavy, and how nature can offer a sense of “lightness” in return to the observer.
  • The Intimate Gaze: Fascinated by the human face, she captures the direct intimacy of an expression. These pieces are not mere likenesses, but explorations of a fleeting moment, the stillness and movement found within a single breath. A momentary gaze can express much that is unsaid, mysterious yet universally recognisable.
  • The Domestic Threshold: Through a contemplation of motherhood and childhood, Alexandra’s work honestly portrays the experience of family life. She investiagtes the sacred disorientation of the maternal role, documenting the ruptures, the falling short, and the complex beauty found within the chaotic reality of home.

Whether at the shoreline or the kitchen table, Alexandra’s work invites the viewer to linger in the raw humanness of the moment, finding solace in expressing the complex layers of the imperfect.

You can find me at Studio Four, Christchurch Arts Centre where I paint and share my process. Originals and commissions are available, I’d love to hear from you if a piece speaks to you.
